July 3, 2002 John and Diane Strada thank club members for their friendship and support. At the June meeting, DRFA members presented retiring president John Strada with a monogramed fishing rod and personally engraved version of John's favorite fishing reel in appreciation of all that he has done for the club. Here are two notes we recently received from John and his wife, Diane.

The following is a note received from John after his arrival in Florida:
"Hello All, After an 18 hour drive I made it to Lakeland at midnight on Monday July 1st. I fished the lake in the park in the center of Lakeland on Tuesday evening. It's called lake Wire and is a favorite spot for evening walkers. The new rod and reel are wonderful. THANK YOU all very much. I'm determined to catch my first Florida Bass on that rod and reel. My e-mail is jstrada@tampabay.rr.com Home phone 863-648-0245 Fax 863-619-8968.
Regards, John Strada"

The following is a note received from Diane Strada after the June meeting:
A short but sweet THANK YOU message to all "my special friends" in the DRFA. I first want to thank you all for the great times that we had in the past years that I "became directly involved" with the DRFA. You are all a great bunch and I'm very happy and proud to call you all my friends. Secondly, please pull together and keep the DRFA No. 1 - John and I know that we will be very proud to watch "John's Labor of Love" continue to thrive and be the great success that we know it can be.... and with everybody working together as a "team" there is no doubt...... I wish you all the best of health, happiness, and most of all "GOOD FISHING!!!"
Diane Strada "

June 27, 2002 Exiting president, John Strada, presented with award for service and friendship. It was a bittersweet night as DRFA members bid farewell to long-time club president John Strada who is moving to Florida for business purposes. John thanked the club members for their support throughout his tenure and related his pride in seeing the club grow to nearly 400 members during his years as president. At the end of the meeting, club members presented John with a small token of their appreciation for a job well done ö above and beyond the call of duty. John was presented with a new model of his favorite Shimano fishing reel, engraved with his initials "JS" and the inscription "DRFA 6-27-2002." John also received a Jimmy Houston model Shimano fishing rod with a hand-lettered inscription reading "To John Strada, in appreciation, DRFA 1995-2002."

A special "Thank you" to all club members who took the opportunity at the meeting, the recent tournament, or in person, to wish John well in his new ventures. We know that your kind wishes were very much appreciated.
Retiring club president John Strada (center) admires the personalized rod and reel combination presented to him at the June meeting, while being congratulated by his wife, Diane, (left) and club secretary, Pete Antoniewicz (right).

June 22, 2002 Club Catfish Tournament Results Despite the unusually clear and sunny conditions (for a DRFA tournament), 46 anglers brought fish to the scales in time to earn points in the Dave Bryant Angler of the Year competition. (Several additional fish also arrived too late to count in the standings.) The total catch weighed was 120.15 lbs. an average of 2.61-lbs. and 18.6" per entry.

The runaway winner was John Turgyan with a 7.49-lb catfish. Scott Ferral took second place with a 6.06-lb entry that also earned him enough points to move into the lead in the Angler of the Year standings with 192 points. Dale Cooley took the third prize with a 4.48-lb fish. Tournament Results and Photos

June 3, 2002 President Strada to step down in preparation for business move to Florida. (Please review list of responsibilities below, to see where you might help.) Members at the May 30 meeting were surprised by the announcement of long-time DRFA president John Strada that he would be stepping down from his club responsibilities in order to pursue new job responsibilities in Florida. Club members expressed their thanks for the many club chores that John handled over the years, and began discussing how the club would be able to reassign those many responsibilities among other club members. Until recently, John and his wife Diane were responsible for the membership roster, the checkbook, the newsletter mailings, and the Big Cat Shootout, among many other things. The club will definitely miss the time and energy the Stradas' put into this group and we owe it to them to pick up the slack to keep the club going strong.

We hope that John and Diane might be able to attend the June 22 tournament and the June 27 meeting so that as many club members as possible can thank them personally for their many sacrifices made on behalf of the club. It is unfortunate that we must experience such as drastic turn of events to come to appreciate just how much individual effort and sacrifice these two individuals have contributed. But we wish them both well in their exciting new move.

Following is a list of the areas in which we need a number of individuals to help. Some are on-going tasks, some are once a year. Talk to Pete Antoniewicz or Mike Hall before or after the June 22 Catfish Tournament and/or the June 27 meeting. Volunteers for the different tasks will be welcomed to discuss their interests at the June 22 Catfish Tournament and the June 27 monthly meeting.

May 18, 2002 Dave Bryant Memorial Smallmouth Bass Tournament Results DRFA anglers continued their battle with Mother Nature on tournament day as approximately two dozen club members braved the wind, rain, and muddy high water conditions to compete in the annual Dave Bryant Memorial Smallmouth Tournament. (The tournament is named after Dave, a past president of the club who passed away suddenly, several years ago.) A total of eight fish were weighed in, averaging 1.39 pounds and 14.28 inches in length.

The top three finishers included William Marshall with a 16.25", 1.95-lb. bronzeback, second place finisher Bob Bonczyk with his 16.75", 1.88-lb. entry, and third place finisher Steve Schumacher, whose fish measured 14.75" and weighed 1.49-lbs. Steve beat out Phil Bakanowsky by 0.01 of a pound to take the final spot.  Tournament Results    Click Here for Picture Page

April 27, 2002 Shad Tournament Results Score it as Mother Nature 99 and DRFA members 1. The 2002 DRFA tournament season started out with tough fishing conditions as all but one angler was shut out of the competition. Anthony Scholl was the only contestant lucky enough to bring a shad to the scales. While fishing out of the Trenton area and catching just two shad, the largest his 2.02-lb. winning entry, Anthony saw very little action from the surrounding boats. But his modest catch was all he needed to capture the $125 top prize and vault into a commanding lead in the Angler of the Year competition with 100 points. No other prizes were awarded.  Tournament Results    Click Here for Picture Page

Club anglers fishing out of Yardley and the Byram area reported numerous boats getting skunked. Unfortunately, the water temperatures in the non-tidal river had dropped 17 degrees from the previous Saturday ö from 68 degrees down to 51 degrees ö and turned off the bite. We'd appreciate it if any club anglers who have success with rebounding action in the coming days and weeks would forward their fishing reports to the Webmaster so that we can advise club members when the action picks up again.

April 21, 2002 From Tim Parent tim.parent@ulticom.com It would be a great idea to get a petition going to fix the access ramp at Yardley, PA. The boat ramp in Yardley, PA, is very difficult to use. I'm forced to use the over-crowded ramp in Trenton because the Yardley ramp is so shallow, I have to back my truck halfway into the river, with the water almost up to my doors, just to launch & load my boat. Even then, I need several people to push or pull it onto the trailer. This isn't just my own problem, but that of everyone who uses the ramp. I believe the problem could be corrected in a day, or two at the most, by slight dredging of the ramp area and re-laying or replacing the ramp itself. That area is a favorite of mine as well as other boaters, fishermen, jet skiers, and swimmers, and would be well worth the effort. Thanks, Tim Parent

March 23, 2002 Frankford Arsenal Ramp Opened ö Joe Mc Closkey  jndinlove@comcast.net The Frankford Arsenal Ramp which was closed over the winter due to vandalism and other illegal activities, is now open, according to the following report from club member Joe McCloskey.

"The Ramp is open. I am a Phila. Police Sergeant on the midnight to 8am shift in the 15th District which covers this ramp and it has been reopened all night long for the last week. docks are also installed. I still recommend anyone using this ramp to have good locks on vehicle, a club on the steering wheel or alarm system. and have the trailer locked to tow vehicle and make sure nothing left visible in tow vehicle to give any temptation to would-be thieves. There are quite a few of us who fish and use this ramp so there is some patrol(I check it frequently when I am working but this is from midnight to 7am) the Pa. Fish Commission is spread thin here so not much help and the guards they hire are not paid real well and don't go the extra mile to prevent theft. Still the ramps are nice when cleaned of debris and there is massive amount of parking and the price is right (free) Striper time is here. Tight lines. Joe McCloskey"

March 18, 2002 Please note that the mailing address for the DRFA has changed. The new mailing address is P.O. Box 32, National Park, NJ 08063. Don't worry, membership applications and Big Cat Shootout applications will be forwarded from the old P.O. Box for the rest of this year.

March 4, 2002 -From Charles Schneider  cmschneider1@att.net I went over to the Power Plant on Friday 3/1 and want to report that the sign is down and the gate is open! I walked down to the cove and there were three guys there and I watched one catch a 3-lbs. catfish which he released. He said he had done well on cats that morning. The other two hadn't done any good but were fishing live bait for Bass. The walkway is very overgrown and the trash is pretty bad down by the cove but the walkway isn't as dirty. Some Idiot has tried to tear down the 'Don't Litter" signs!! Unbelievable!!! I know its a little early but "THINK SHAD" (and they will come)!
